In Reader's Workshop, the readers will become engaged and independent readers as they explore fiction and non-fiction texts!
Big Ideas in Fiction
- Identify and summarize story elements including setting, plot, and point of view
- Describe complex characters using their traits and changes
- Identify and compare themes in multiple texts
- Analyze how character perspective and small moments impact the overall plot and message of a story
Big Ideas in Non-fiction
- Identify and summarize the main idea and key supporting evidence in a text
- Recognize text structure and use it to identify important information
- Analyze the purpose of one part of the text within the whole
- Infer conclusions from a text based on evidence
Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop, the authors will become thoughtful independent writers. Throughout the year, the authors will craft: narratives, opinion essays, literary essays, and informational texts.

- Creating clear, engaging, and thoughtful leads and conclusions in their writing
- Using transition words and paragraphs to organize writing
- Elaborate while writing using a variety of details and examples
- Develop their craft using effective word choice and figurative language
- Apply grade level conventions, spelling, punctuation, and grammar
